Obama, Oprah, and the Contagion of Hope

Oprah Winfrey went out on a limb to campaign for Senator Obama at the beginning of his unlikely bid for the White House. Although polls showed that the results were mixed in terms of her influence on voters, there is little question that her presence at his pre-Iowa rallies raised a relatively unknown Senator nearly to the level of his chief rival in national recognition and fund-raising ability.

Politics aside, what Oprah and Obama have in common is a keen ability to find (and transmit) hope, amid whirlpools of emotional pollution. Oprah finds something genuinely hopeful even in her most unsophisticated guests and in those who merely seem out to sell something. Obama finds hope even in the shell-game of politics and in the larger body of work of Reverend Jeremiah Wright. The Senator's ability to see the hope and ignore the pollution in his pastor's sermons will not be his undoing, because we all achingly long to find hope and know intuitively that it is most often surrounded by anguish. Oprah and Obama help us understand that there is more hope in suffering than in Hallmark cards and polically correct pronouncements.

In late 2004, I was a consultant on Oprah Winfrey shows about emotional abuse in intimate relationships. The first two shows produced a fair amount of feedback from women complaining about the horrors of emotional abuse. But the third installment showed about 30 minutes of a 30-hour therapy of an abusive man, depicting, albeit in a highly condensed form, the excruciating process of change. Oprah's narration of the therapy and the obvious results of the reformed abuser and his newly confident wife started an avalanche of requests for treatment from men. In the first week after the show aired, we received more than a thousand emails and phone calls each day from men who recognized their problems with resentment, anger, or abuse and wanted help to change. The phenomenon of men coming forward to ask for treatment is completely unprecedented in research literature on abuse. Amazingly, the hope generated by Oprah and those TV shows continues more than three years after they were first aired.

Oprah Winfrey is unique among entertainment personalities in her ability to find and transmit hope amid the most painful examples of emotional pollution, as Senator Obama is unique among political figures for that same ability. They are successful because they cut through our cynicism and pain to touch the need for hope that may wither but will not die. They make us feel that we can be better persons.

O for Oprah and Obama and HOPE

Right on target!!!. Yes, Oprah's ability to communicate with such a vast population-The Course of New Earth, 1.million and a half participants-; and transmit love, compassion, engagement is so but so powerful.... As a therapist, I has defended Oprah among colleagues so many times, exactly about the issue of "therapy" in TV. I don't think we ever have all the therapist needed to provide treatment, nor people will have the health insure or enough money to afford therapy. Thanks god, that she is using her power for the bettering of people and the earth....with respect for the other, science, spirituality and and great deal of psycho-education...

I am going to leap to another arena and say something that I know is going to sound crazy, since Oprah has said so many times, she is not political material or something in that regard; wouldn't it be fantastic Obama for President and O for VP....

I'd vote for that ticket!

I'd vote for that ticket! The point about Oprah is that she has an ability to pluck out what is most hopeful about a situation, book, therapy, guest, etc., regardless of whatever crap might also be there. Obama has that same appeal.

As for therapists complaining, I think she has done more for raising the public consciousness in favor of therapy than all the books by therapists combined. She sends more business than she deters.

Hope for what and in what

Hope for what and in what is my question? When Obama denies the basic right to life and liberty of the most vulnerable of human beings, the unborn - then what message of hope is there for protection, compassion etc. when human life has no value within his philosophy.

Contagion of Hope

I believe your point was about hope being contagious which I agree. Therefore it seems that there is a prerequisite - that there must be a belief or trust in the object the idea(the what) or the person (the in what) promoting the idea in order for hope to be contagious. What are your thoughts on there being a prerequisite in order for hope to be contagious?

Transmission of hope goes beyond the message

The hope transmitted by certain charismatic persons transcends their message. It’s transmitted more by their own hopefulness than by the content of what they say. You feel the person more than you believe in the ideas. Of course that has a negative consequence as well. History is filled with charismatic leaders who brought about the destruction of their people; a great many would-be lovers have painfully mistaken charisma for love. The power of hope lies in the fact that we all want to embrace it, which is why it brings us to tears when we let ourselves do it. Our reluctance to be disappointed in misplacing hope is the barrier. Older people tend to be more cynical because we’ve been disappointed more. Hope is its own reward, as long as following the hope doesn’t cause you to violate any of your other values.

Hope for hope's sake

Thanks for your thoughts if I understand it, this hope for hope's sake comes from within, that there is something better out there and that we can improve, learn and grow or make things better. I like your warning when you feel the person then stop and think about the placement of your hope and a the same time be careful about becoming cynical because of disappointments. In other words don't throw out the baby, "Hope", because hope is real and rewarding to think about creating something better even though the idea or person did not work out as you had originally hoped. Did I understand it?

Hope as a prequisite for value investment

Yes, that's basically it. It is very difficult to invest value in anything without hope. It is part of what I call core value and very close to the will to live.

Hope part of core value

Hope part of core value that's intriguing. Will you be blogging more about the other parts of core value and the will to live? Does core value mean that there are "core" values that are objectively true for all humans?

Core value

I will be blogging more about core value, which is the drive to create value. Values, which vary culturally, are the result of the drive. There are a few nearly universal core values. You can read more on our website: compassionpower.com.

Core value defined

Your website is great lot's to explore and read. I found the answer to what Core value is from the survey area - "Core value is the unique human drive to create value, to make persons and things important and worthy of appreciation, time, energy, effort, and sacrifice". So creating value is investing time etc. with and in my wife to show her I value her is core value. I'm a little confused it's like Core Value is Valuing - it's sort of like trying to define the number two it is self defining. Value is both the noun and the description. Could you clarify or say it in a different way for me?

Core value is an emotional state

Core value is an emotional state. Like all emotional states, it has a motivation to do something. For instance, fear is an emotional state that carries motivation to flee, freeze, or hide. Core value carries a motivation to improve, build, create, connect, protect, etc.

Core to all humans

Do all humans have this emotional state of core value motivation to improve, build, create, connect, protect, etc.? If so what is the research that would support this?

Triggers of the emotional state of core value

Thanks your post it helped clarify core value. So are the questions in the core value survey that all start with "Things I have done or could do ...." trigger this core value emotional state? So if I can trigger the emotional state of core value it will then counteract these emotional pollutants within this blog is that correct?
