Fear and Loathing: On The Campaign Trail '08

There's an interesting element of BS I didn't mention in my recent post about Hunter S. Thompson's backlash against political bull. Just like in hoaxes and cons, a good BS artist expects the audience to do much of the work for him: He only needs to be suggestive and they'll fill in the blanks themselves.

Last month I asked Harry Frankfurt, author of On Bullshit, about instances of malarkey in the news, and also brought up the fill-in-the-blanks element of BS. He provided this juicy example:

When Hillary tells you that she has lots of experience, she doesn’t really tell you what the experience is, but you’re supposed to imagine what it must have been. She must have been sitting in the Situation Room when the Joint Chiefs of Staff were making their judgments about how to proceed in Iraq and elsewhere. She never says that but that’s what you’re supposed to fantasize... Hillary’s claim to have had a lot of experience in government is [BS]; she doesn’t have any experience. She’s been a senator for [a few] years but she’s not talking about that; she’s talking about sleeping with the president for eight years as if that’s prepared her to run the country.

Not to take sides, Frankfurt noted that "every candidate is producing [BS] at a rapid rate." He said that John McCain was "impressively free" of bullocks in the 2000 presidential campaign, but has since toned down his sincerity, perhaps because he lost. And as for the current president:

It’s very hard to know whether it's [BS] or lying on his part... but I don’t know if he knows the difference, to tell you the truth. He seems to be very impaired when it comes to identifying the truth and sticking to the facts. I think he’s interested in doing whatever he thinks is necessary to getting his way, and that is the mark of a [BS]er.

More about BS!

Dr. Frankfurt has ably hit the nail on the head. Texas has a long history of producing BSers, but it does seem that, at a certain point, it's easy to start believing your own BS. (Consider that the unofficial anthem of the state is "Cotton-Eyed Joe" with its call and response of "Bullshit!" "What you say?" "Bullshit!")

Please give us more BS analysis of the candidates!

> she’s talking about

> she’s talking about sleeping with the president for eight years as if that’s prepared her to run the country.

All of this misses the elephant in the room here. Just once, just once, i would like to see a reporter ask Hillary this rude question:

"You are running on the theory that you were so involved in the Presidency when your husband was President, that its like you have already been president. But if you were REALLY that involved, then why did he feel comfortable screwing everything on 2 legs, while he was president? It suggests that he was not only alone there for long periods of time, but he didn't even worry about you coming in unexpectedly."

Some co-president.

I admit i am riveted by the campaign and i figured out why a while ago. Here's my theory on the clintons. Hillary made a deal years ago, to stay in this sham of a marriage, help this idiot become president, but only if he would then help her to become president. She stayed with him through all that hurtful shit he did to her, because she had her eyes on that prize. And just when it seemed she would get it, she is seeing this lightweight snatch it from her. She gave up so much for it, and she is losing it.

Watching her become more and more desperate is riveting.

Qualifications

If sleeping with the President is what makes her qualified, then based upon what we know about Bill, there a whole lot more women running around DC, who are equally or more qualified than Hillary ....

Using that reasoning, Monica

Using that reasoning, Monica Lewinsky is extremely qualified for Secretary of Health and Human Services.

"sleeping with the president for eight years"

They were actually sleeping together still? Not the whole time, I have to think.

To introduce a variation on

To introduce a variation on A.W.'s question a reporter should ask Hillary Clinton:

"You are running on the theory that you were so involved in the Presidency when your husband was President, that its like you have already been president. But if you were REALLY that involved, can we expect to see similar involvement on the part of Bill Clinton during your administration?

Pot v. Kettle

It seems the closing Frankfurter quote (see below), without clarifying context, is a prime example of the proposition that a "good BS artist expects the audience to do much of the work for him: He only needs to be suggestive and they'll fill in the blanks themselves."

Presumably the author's original statement concerning McCain offered some example of the claimed McCain phenomenon. If so, it ought to have been mentioned, if only by way of brief introduction, in this piece. If not, than BS appears to have found a prominent place in an article about BS.

I'm sure Hilary spent eight

I'm sure Hilary spent eight years sleeping in the Presidential bed. I'm also fairly confidant that Bill spent many of those years sleeping on the Presidential couch.

Sleeping

Dangit, Anonymous beat me to the punch!

Frankfurter

"Just like in hoaxes and cons, a good BS artist expects the audience to do much of the work for him: He only needs to be suggestive and they'll fill in the blanks themselves."
Check out Frankfurt's comments on "the current President". See any facts there?
Seems Frankfurt REALLY knows his business!

You forgot all the time she

You forgot all the time she spent looking in the other direction

Hillary

Wow. You people are deluding yourselves by concentrating on things other than Hillary's experience. Her experience as First Lady does qualify...she was in the environment...and I doubt she just sat back washing Bill's laundry. Man if these are the sort of people supporting Obama...we are in trouble. Focus on the issues people. Come on.
