Based on a friend's tip, I just watched a YouTube clip of Christina Ricci's interview on Conan last night. It includes what I believe to be not only the best plug for Psychology Today but the best explanation of the major immunohistocompatibility complex (MHC) that a Hollywood starlet has even given on a late night talk show.
After the minute and a half she spends discussing Viggo Mortensen fighting naked, and the story about pronouncing chaos "chah-hose" (BTW I used to read stomach as "stow-match"), she gets to the goods at 4:10.
I love how even as Conan makes fun of PT (Ricci's "favorite magazine" and her "geeky guilty pleasure"), a sole audience member screams in support of the mag.
She then goes on to summarize quite coherently this article that Jay edited for the last issue, about how women prefer the BO of men whose immune systems complement theirs and thus would produce healthy offspring. (We also covered the MHC here, and we've covered other elements of aroma and romance here, here, here, and, if you call strippers romantic, here.)
Ironically, right around when Conan was taping, Alanis Morissette was telling me that PT was one of her favorite magazines. (She's really into psychology.) As a side note, I did make sure to ask her what slime tastes like. (Alanis performed in several episodes of You Can't Do That On Television in 1986.) When she listed several ingredients from the recipe, I was all "I know what I'm doing this weekend," and I think it's the first interview I've ever done that ended with "Enjoy the slime." Although I'd have to check on that.
