I'm not sure he was clear in writing this article, but I think your point is exactly what he was driving at: because the most violent and aggressive males achieved access to females, those were the genes that were passed on. Less aggressive males failed to successfully replicate their DNA and were wiped off the planet. Congruently, women who mated with more timid men were not successful genetically. Chances are they produced sons or grandsons who were not favored by other females. So men evolved to be aggressive from both ends of the genetic stick, so to speak.
